Should the barn be built from traditional materials or should it be a modern steel framed shed ?
Why dont you put another application in to replace the current barn with a blue steel framed building. If they refuse that then they are saying that no style of building would be considered acceptable in Swithland.

I agree with the previous post...apply to rebuild a metal 'flat-pack' monster then watch all the petty-minded complainers swollow their words. Do they not have better things to do than destroy a piece of what would become English Country Heritage?

Exactly, and to pull it down and potentially replace it with a bland green or blue steel eyesore is such a shame.

The barn as it stands adds to the character of the village and it would soon look weathered and already has stopped looking 'new' so it fits in, when I drive past if I see it through the trees it is appealing to the eye, where a steel erection will look awful in comparison.

Thanks for your support TimM. Unfortunately the Council dont seem to have much common sence when it comes to these kind of matters.

My belief is that "petty minded complainers" would prefer the site to be returned to it's former state of meadow land.

The barn does look very ornate. I agree the Council are negligent in giving you the go ahead to build against fully approved designs, but the locals are not interested in what the Council approved or did not approve. They simply dont like to see a barn in their village that looks better than most of their homes ! If I were you I would try to compromise with the Council and modify the design to make it appear less ornate. Take a gable or two off, remove the turret, fill in the windows. It has got to be a balance between local politics and your right to the barn.

Here's another lovely barn. This one is a Tithe Barn in Gloucestershire. Looks like Mr White is not the only one that has built a nice looking barn. The difference is today people dont appreciate quality buildings and architecture. The architect of Phoenix barn should be given an award for technical excellence.
